H. Maxine Deardorff, age 97 of Stanton, died Thursday November 5, 2009 at her home in Stanton. She was born April 22, 1912 in Stanton the daughter of Theodore and Gertrude (Miller) Namur. Maxine, as she preferred to be called, attended Stanton County Schools, graduating in 1929. She graduated from a women's college in Lindenwood, MO, in 1933, with a BA in music, and a Masters in music from Northwestern Univ., Des Moines, IA. She had a 10 year teaching career in 5 different Iowa schools, some of the most enjoyable years of her life. She met Rolland Deardorff at Drake University while taking advanced classes.

Maxine married Rolland "Roll" Deardorff on December 20, 1945 at Topeka, Kansas, Maxine & "Roll" made their home in Pickering, Missouri for one year and moved to a farm they owned 2 ½ miles west of Stanton. Maxine was a tough Nebraska girl and carried a lantern in front of the tractor in order to harvest their crops, while performing all the other duties of a farm wife. She and "Roll" sold their farm to Gus Bremer for his son, Gus and wife Nancy, and the Deardorff's moved into Stanton in about 1951. During this time they purchased the Stanton Telephone Company from A.W. Forbes and Harry Miller Estate, which they operated along with farming for 35 years, selling Stanton Telephone Company to the Paden Family in 1980.

Maxine was an active member of the Stanton Congregational Church, where she usually played the organ and participated in the musical activities. She enjoyed knitting, playing the piano and, of course her beloved baseball games! We're sure she was most pleased to be able to watch the World Series this year. Even though Maxine had been confined to her home for the last 25 years, she maintained a most positive attitude. She kept up on local, regional and national affairs through television and her great network of locals keeping in contact with her. She kept a sharp mind throughout her life, stating "I don't worry too much about my knees not working as long as my mind stays with me!"

She is survived by cousins: Dan and Helen Harris, Littleton, CO and Bob and Marilyn Harris, Menifee, CA, and a step-cousin: Joy Nixon Anderson, Stromsburg, NE.

Maxine is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Rolland who died on January 29, 2005.
