Ruth Marjorie (Sasse) Pestel was born on August 8, 1928 at home in rural Pilger. She was baptized at the United Methodist church in Pilger. Her educational years were spent at District 14 through 8th grade, Pilger High School where she graduated in 1946; Nebraska Wesleyan and Wayne State College. She then taught grade school in rural Pender.

She was joined in marriage with Clarence Pestel on December 28, 1949 and then resided in rural Stanton for over 40 years where they farmed until they moved to Stanton in 1991. During this time she worked for the US Department of Agriculture. In 1992 Ruth became an EMT for the Stanton Rescue Squad in which she was active for many years. She was a resident of the Stanton Health Care for the past four years.

Ruth enjoyed multiple activities including: being a member of the Willing to Learn Club, participating as a 4-H leader, being one of the founders of the Young Moderns Extension Club, serving as state president for Nebraska Extension Clubs, playing an active role in The Hazben Band formed for the 1966 Stanton County Centennial as well as participating on the cookbook committee for the occasion, organizing blood drives for Stanton County, volunteering at the Lutheran Community Hospital and serving as a member of the Stanton Legion Club. Before children became part of her life she sang with "Big Bands" including Lawrence Welk that came to King's Ballroom in Norfolk as well as bands that came to Peony Park in Omaha. After that she sang at various church and community activities. Ruth made and decorated cakes for many wedding and other occasions throughout the area. Other activities she enjoyed included pitch and bridge club, ballroom dancing with friends at Kings in Norfolk and the Howells and Schulyer ballrooms. She was an accomplished seamstress, pianist, organist, and baritone player. Ruth enjoyed her grandchildren and loved to spend time with them. Many people know Ruth's love for butterflies. Ruth always had a smile on her face and loved to socialize.

Ruth is survived by a daughter and her husband, Marjorie and Allan Zimmerman of Bucyrus, Kansas; a son and wife, Loren and Laura Pestel of Stanton; three grand-daughters, Ibby Zimmerman, Shannon Pestel, and Kylea Pestel; a niece and 2 nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar Sasse and Ethel (Moore) Sasse; husband Clarence, who died June 1999; and one sister Alene.
