Arthur "Art" Kuhl, 76, of Randolph, Neb., died July 16, 2009, at Faith Regional Health Center from post-surgical complications.
Arthur Derieg Kuhl was born November 19, 1932, in rural Randolph, to Arthur John Kuhl and Margaret (Derieg) Kuhl. He attended the former Eagle Grove (one-room) School and graduated from St. Frances High School, Randolph, in 1950.
He received his bachelor's degree in agronomy in 1954 from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He then served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force for several years, with postings in Japan and Los Alamos, N.M. In 1969, Art received his master of science degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. with a major in soil science and a minor in geomorphology.
He married Jean Werst on August 24, 1968, in Louisville, Ky.
Art was a soil scientist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Soil Conservation Service before and after earning his master's degree. His service started with soil surveys, and he advanced to managerial work with the agency. He started with the USDA in Wayne, Neb., and also worked in its offices in Falls City, Neb.; Salamanca, N.Y.; Lexington, Ky.; Harrisburg, Pa.; and Ames, Iowa. He retired from the USDA following 35 years of service. After retiring from government service, Art was a rural real estate appraiser in the Ames, Iowa area. Once their children were grown, he and Jean moved back to Randolph in 1998.
Art was on the boards of directors for the Lewis and Clark RC&D, the Wau-Col Rural Water District, and Windharvesters, LLC. He was a member of the Randolph Knights of Columbus, the Soil and Water Conservation Society, VFW Post 5545 and American Legion Post 113. He was a Eucharistic minister, and with his wife, took communion to the residents at Colonial Manor Nursing Home.
Art enjoyed reading, solving problems, working outdoors and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Jean, of Randolph; three sons, John (Kathy) of Davenport, Iowa; Joe of Moscow, Idaho; and David (Aysha Keisler) of Baltimore; one daughter, Betsy (Gus) Marmaras of Burlington, Wis.; and four grandchildren.
