Merele P. Kavanaugh, 89 of Randolph, died Sunday January 31, 2010 at Colonial Manor of Randolph in Randolph. Merele, son of Maurice and Ella (McCloud) Kavanaugh, was born April 22, 1920 on the family farm near Dixon, NE. He attended rural school in Dixon County. Merele was a hard worker and farmed with the family until he moved to a farm south of Randolph for several years. Then moved to a farm one mile east of Randolph and soon met and married Rose Korth on November 19, 1946 at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church in Randolph, NE. Later they moved to a farm southeast of Belden where they farmed for 44 years. He worked for Cedar County in the Road Maintenance department for 18 years along with farming with his sons. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Belden, where he served on the parish council for 20 years, until he and Rose moved to Randolph and joined the St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church in Randolph. He was a past member of Farm Bureau.
Merele loved his family and enjoyed attending many area cattle sales, farming, playing cards, horses, watching sports such as boxing, horse races, football and rodeo on television. After retirement, he spent his spare time at his nephew's feed store visiting and assisting with customer service.
Merele is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rose Kavanaugh; two sons, Gary and Janet Kavanaugh of Laurel, Pat Kavanaugh of Randolph; two granddaughters, Debra and Steve Obermeyer of Wakefield, Colleen Kavanaugh of Orlando, FL; one brother, Laverne Kavanaugh of Lincoln and one sister, Agnes Serven of Laurel; one sister-in-law, Jeannie Kavanaugh of Dixon; one brother-in-law, Ed Kessler of Randolph and many dear nieces and nephews. Merele was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Ella Kavanaugh; five brothers, Maurice Jr., James, Gerele (his twin brother), Jack, Vincent, and one sister Rosella Kessler.
