Gerard F. Bermel
1927-2010

Gerard Francis "Get" Bermel was born February 13, 1927 to Frank and Gertrude (Aschoff) Bermel at their farm, east of Randolph, NE. He was the second of eight children. During the school years, the kids would either walk, ride the horse, take the horse and buggy or catch a ride from Frank Schrad the two and one half miles into town. His daily chores on the farm were cleaning the chicken barn and gathering the eggs. While in high school, he worked for Harold Sherwood at the Randolph Creamery. As a young man, he enjoyed baseball and continued to follow the sport throughout his life.

He attended St. Frances Catholic School in Randolph throughout his school years and graduated May 13, 1945. Upon graduation, he reported for Army boot camp at Fort Leavenworth, KS. He shipped overseas and arrived in Germany on Christmas Eve, 1945. His tour in Germany gave him the opportunity to visit different countries and landmarks of Europe, experiences which he shared with his friends and family back home through stories and pictures. While in the Army, he began to play golf and boxed. He tried snow skiing -- once. He received an honorable discharge on November 22, 1946.

He returned to Randolph where he began to farm and live south of town. He farmed with horses until he could afford his first tractor. This same land he continued to farm for 63 years until his death.

On November 19, 1951, he married Elaine Schellpeper at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church in Randolph. Always the hard worker, after their reception that afternoon, he went back out to the fields to continue to pick corn. To this union, five children were born.

"Get" loved his family deeply, especially enjoying his time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a prankster, pulling tricks on and teasing people up to his last days.

He was a lifelong member of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, rarely missing a Mass or Day of Obligation. He was a member of the Alvin Kessler VFW Post #5545.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elaine Bermel of Randolph; 5 children Carol and Dan Glaser of Stanton; Vicki Haase of Loveland, CO; Cindy Purdie of South Dakota; Lynell and Dennis Morgan of Elgin, NE; Francis and Malissa Bermel of Randolph. 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 6 brothers and sisters Art Bermel of Randolph; Richard and Ellen Bermel of Randolph; Joan and Bill Kenny of Norfolk; Darlene and Walt Sunderman of Norfolk; Francis and Sandy Bermel of San Gabriel, CA; Vince and Wilma Bermel of Oakton, VA; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Don and sister-in-law Darlene Bermel.

The family requests a memorial of your choice in lieu of flowers.
